A World Cup unlike any before it
The 2026 edition is the largest in history — the first with 48 nations, the first staged across three countries, and the first to use a new 12-group format. Top two from each group advance automatically, plus the eight best third-placed teams — a brand-new Round of 32is added before the knockouts everyone knows.
The action runs from 11 June at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to the final on 19 July at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. England open in Arlington; Scotland start against Haiti in Foxborough. Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, Spain — all present. Also: Curaçao, Uzbekistan, Jordan, DR Congo, Cape Verde — five nations making their debut.

Five first-timers
The 48-team expansion opens the door. Five nations walk out at a World Cup for the very first time — and two of them are drawn with the favourites.
Smallest nation ever to qualify — 150k people, one Caribbean island, one World Cup.
Central Asia's long wait ends — third consecutive qualifying near-miss turned into a first dance.
Asian Cup runners-up and the first Jordanian side to punch through — drawn alongside Argentina.
The Leopards finally back on the world stage, 52 years after their only prior appearance.
Population 525,000 — the islands arrive with a pedigree of upsets and a fearless approach.
