The action runs from 11 June at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to the final on 19 July at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. England open in Arlington; Scotland start against Haiti in Foxborough. Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, Spain — all present. Also: Curaçao, Uzbekistan, Jordan, DR Congo, Cape Verde — five nations making their debut.

World Cup 2026 — the quick guide

When does the World Cup 2026 start and end?
The tournament runs from Thursday 11 June 2026 to Sunday 19 July 2026 — 39 days of football across 16 host cities in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
How many teams are at the World Cup 2026?
48 teams, up from 32 in Qatar 2022. They're divided into 12 groups of four. The top two from each group automatically advance — plus the eight best third-placed teams, making 32 qualifiers for the new Round of 32 knockout stage.
Where is the opening match and the final?
The opening match is Mexico vs South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City (20:00 UK time, 11 June). The final is at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 19 July, kick-off 20:00 UK time.
Are England and Scotland both playing?
Yes. England are in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama — they open against Croatia in Arlington on 17 June (21:00 UK time). Scotland are in Group C with Brazil, Morocco and Haiti — they kick off against Haiti in Foxborough on 14 June (02:00 UK time).
What's the new Round of 32?
With 48 teams and 12 groups, FIFA needed an extra knockout round to take 32 qualifiers down to 16. The Round of 32 begins on 28 June and finishes 3 July. Lose and you're out.
